Download 1080p MP4s, upload them to YouTube as public or unlisted videos and pick them in Google Ads.

Where Shorts ads run

Which campaigns show ads in the YouTube Shorts feed?

Shorts ads play full screen between organic Shorts, and viewers can swipe past them at any time. These Google Ads campaign types can serve there.

  • Demand Gen

    Conversions & clicks

Takes the most canvases, including 4:5. It replaced Video action campaigns, so action-focused Shorts ads now run here.

The YouTube Shorts safe zone, in pixels

On a 1080×1920 Shorts ad the player's buttons and text sit on top of your video. Google's safe zone overlay leaves an 840×960 px area that nothing covers.

  • Exports are H.264 MP4 with AAC audio at 1080p, the codec pair YouTube recommends for uploads.

  • Horizontal videos still serve on Shorts, but with blurred bars above and below. A native 9:16 cut fills the screen.

  • Shorts ads play from a YouTube video: upload each export to your channel as public or unlisted, then pick it in Google Ads.

FAQ

YouTube Shorts ads: quick answers

What size is a YouTube Shorts ad?

1080×1920 px, a 9:16 vertical video. Google's minimum is 720×1280 px. Square (1080×1080) and landscape (1920×1080) videos can also serve, but only vertical fills the Shorts screen.

How long can a YouTube Shorts ad be?

Up to 3 minutes, but the Shorts feed plays the first 60 seconds and Google recommends staying under 60. For action-focused ads it suggests 10 to 30 seconds; Video reach campaigns take 6 to 60 seconds.

Do YouTube Shorts ads have to be vertical?

No, but they should be. Horizontal videos serve on Shorts with blurred bars above and below, so the ad looks smaller than the Shorts around it. Google recommends 9:16 vertical video.

What is the YouTube Shorts safe zone?

On a 1080×1920 ad, keep text and logos out of the top 288 px (15%), the bottom 672 px (35%), the right 192 px (about 18%) and the left 48 px. That leaves an 840×960 px safe area, per Google's overlay.

Can viewers skip YouTube Shorts ads?

Yes, straight away. Shorts ads sit between organic Shorts and viewers can swipe past them at any time, so show the product and the hook in the first two seconds.

What are the Demand Gen video sizes?

Demand Gen takes 16:9 (1920×1080), 1:1 (1080×1080), 4:5 (1080×1350) and 9:16 (1080×1920) videos of at least 5 seconds. Include the 9:16 version so the Shorts share of your budget serves full screen.

Can I use my Reels or TikTok video as a Shorts ad?

Yes. They share the 9:16, 1080×1920 canvas, but the layouts differ: Shorts puts the action buttons on the right and the title, channel and CTA in the bottom 35%. Check the framing here with the safe zones on, and export a clean file without another app's watermark.

How do I resize a landscape video for YouTube Shorts without cropping?

Choose Fit instead of Fill: the whole frame is kept and the space above and below is filled with a blurred copy of the video or your brand colour. Or use Fill and drag to keep the subject inside the safe area.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads, previews and re-encodes the file with WebCodecs. Nothing is sent to Noovid or any server, so large files work without waiting for an upload.

Does resizing lose quality?

The video is re-encoded once at a high bitrate at 1080p. If your source is smaller than a target size, the tool flags that it is being upscaled.

Is the audio kept?

Yes, the original audio track is carried into every export as AAC. Google reports that sound on Shorts ads lifts conversions by over 20%, so keep the music or voiceover.

Which browsers does the resizer work in?

Previews work everywhere. Video export needs WebCodecs, available in recent Chrome, Edge and Safari; image export works in every modern browser.
